General Notes:
1847 born Perthshire, Scotland SA Death 1913 380/147 ANDERSON John undefined Hindmarsh
John Anderson was born 19 Sep 1847 out of wedlock; his father remains unidentified. In the 1851 Census he was living in Dee Street, Old Machar, Aberdeen with his mother and aunt and is recorded as "visitor". In 1853 his mother married James Morison and in the 1861 Census John is recorded as "boarder", apprentice compositor. In the 1871 Census John is living with his mother and half sister and recorded as a "son", printer compositer.
John was apprenticed at The Perthshire Constitutional & Journal as a compositor for 7 years and also as a journeyman. He worked as a compositer at the University Press in Edinburgh for a period of 2 years, then again for 18 months before leaving Scotland in 1880.
On 6 June 1880 John emigrated to South Africa leaving Edinburgh for Dartmouth Devon on "Brittania." On 11 June 1880 he departed Dartmouth by Steamer "Balmoral Castle" arriving Cape Town 3 July 1880; thence Cape Town by steamer "Melrose" on 5 July 1880 reaching Durban Natal 9 July 1880. John lived in Durban between July 1880 and June 1883. On 26 June 1883 he returned to Cape Town on the "Asiatic" arriving there 30 June 1883. Between July 1883 and February 1884 he lived in Cape Town for about 7 months while working at the Cape Argus. During this time John married Caroline Stubbs (formerly Schlussler nee Moyle) by Special Licence at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on 19 November 1883. Around February 1884 it is believed that John and Caroline left Cape Town bound for Adelaide South Australia - possibly on the barque "Rebecca" which landed at Largs Pier 14 April 1884. From 1884 to 1909 John took up employment as a compositor with W.K. Thomas & Co. publishers of The Register Newspaper. In January 1886 Caroline died of consumption and within two years John married Mary Ann Gunter and they raised a family in Adelaide over the next 25 years. During that time the family undertook a moved to Scott's Creek where they kept cows and chickens, however around 1910 they returned to the city where John resumed employment in his trade at Hussey & Gillingham, Printers, until his untimely death in 1913.
As per Natal Mercantile Advertiser 10 July 1880 John departed Cape Town 5 July 1880 arrived Durban 9 July 1880 on CRMS Melrose ex Balmoral Castle to Cape Town. Some of the immigrants were destined for employment by the firm of P Davis & Sons (see illustration, advertisement from Natal Almanac in picture gallery). The passenger list is grouped in families but note that the first name and initial mentioned in the list is not always that of the head of the family as some of these men had travelled ahead of their wives and children, and were the "Applicant" rather than "Immigrant", these men would have been waiting to welcome the family on their arrival. A few were women travelling alone, one example being A. W. Hunter who was to take up employment as a domestic servant. Some of the men were recruits for the Natal Mounted Police.
The only surviving page of the journey to Durban written by John Anderson as follows: . . . the funds of the Society Running, jumping, trials of strength were the principal events. The weather and sea were all that could be desired. T. Peddie won the . . . and one at high jumping but he fell at the hurdle race and lost it, and hurt his wrists. Jun 25: This was the second day of the sports and not so favourable for them as the ship was heaving a good deal. There was a good deal of partiality shown today to others than the steerage passengers owing to their success the previous day which caused a little amount for the time being. T. Peddie has both of his arms sling-safe today which has kept him from taking part. The Scotch passengers challenged the English for a . . . was to take place next week but the challenge was not accepted. The baggage should have come up today but was put off till tomorrow. June 26: The baggage was taken up today by 11 a.m. I let mine alone as it was too far down. Everyone was wishing he or she was landed. They all say they are not seasick but sick of the sea. The oranges were given to the winners at two p.m. on the quarter deck which helped to pass the times . . .
