Obituary:
MR. F.W. SMART
Mr. Frederick W. Smart, of Koppio, who died recently at the Tumby Hospital, was bom at Kangarilla on February 10, 1812. From his earliest days he took an active interest in church work, being a Sunday-school teacher for many years, and also leader of the Methodist Church Choir. As a young man he followed the occupation of a sawyer, cutting timber for most of the principal jetties and bridges of the State. In 1870 he was one of the party that left Port Adelaide in the steamer Omeo to erect the overland telegraph line from Darwin south. When the northern areas were opened in 1879 he selected land in the hundred of Baroota. While there he bred Smart's Purple Straw wheat, which was grown with success throughout the State. In 1891 he took up land in the Glen Boree district, near Fowler's Bay, which he subsequently transferred to his eldest son. When Koppio station was subdivided he selected a block there, and resided there until his death. His wife died in 1916. He leaves four sons, Messrs. F.J. Smart, of Fowler's Bay; C.H. Smart, of Boulder, W.A.; W.E. Smart, of Chandada; and J.W. Smart of Koppio; and three daughters, Mrs. F. Kopke, of Adelaide; Miss L. Smart, of Koppio; and Mrs. W. Reynolds, of Kilkenny.
