John's mother died when he was six months old. He was cared for by his aunt & uncle, Dolly & Jack Elton, who lived at 17 Price Weir Ave, Allenby Gardens, raising him with their own children. His father, Don, purchased a home at 3 Price Weir Ave, Allenby Gardens and John grew up between these two households. His grandmother and Aunt Jessie lived at 3 Price Weir Ave with his father until Don married again. At some stage John joined the household at number 3 until the War intervened. As a boy he learnt the flute and joined the Adelaide Drum and Fife Band (image in picture gallery). He was nick-named 'Sandy' by Anderson relatives. When John turned 18 he was called up for the war and did his basic training at Port Pirie and Victor Harbor. He joined the RAAF and was posted to the Airforce Base, Rathmines, NSW. Toward the end of the War he was flying in Catalina Flying Boats and was on active duty in Northern Australia and New Guinea, finishing the War as Flt Lieutenant. During non-operational time his hobby was making wooden trucks for his young relatives. When the War finished he had the opportunity to further his education and undertook Accountancy. This qualification led to a position with the Shell Company for whom he worked most of his life; commencing in Adelaide, transferring to Melbourne and finally settling and retiring in Melbourne.
