Personal column:
The death of Mr. Martin Charles Hocking at his home, Lefevre-terrace, North Adelaide, on Thursday evening, has removed one of the best known and most popular sporting writers in Australia. As "Tatiara," of "The Advertiser," his comments on turf matters have been read with interest by a large following, and sincere regret will be expressed at his death not only by his many readers, but by his large circle of friends in this and other States. He was a man of a kindly and generous nature, and ever ready to give assistance to those desiring it. As an authority on turf matters he had few equals in the Commonwealth. Mr. Hock ing was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Hocking, and was born in Adelaide 68 years ago. He received his education at Whinham College, and early manitested a liking for journalism. In 1887 he joined the staff of "The Advertiser," and soon became sporting editor, a position he held till his death. His wife, who died fire years ago, was Miss Amy B. Mildred, eldest daughter of Mr. Hiram Mildred, who came to South Australia with Colonel Light in the Rapid, in 1836. His three brothers are Messrs. E. W. Hocking (Perth), S. E. Hocking (proprietor of the "Kalgoorlie Miner"), and H. Hocking (Perth). He had two sisters, both of whom predeceased him. Mr. Hock ing leaves three daughters. Mrs. Roy S. Ridgway (Melbourne), Mrs, J. R. Cornford (Napier) New Zealand), and Miss S. H. Hocking (North Adelaide), and one son, Mr. Keith Hocking (North Adelaide) Mr. Ridgway was formerly a member of Advertiser" staff.
