North-West Enthralls Visiting Authoress:
A South Australian writer, Mrs. Myrtle Rose White, who has just visited her son's station near Port Hedland, said in Perth that she was "enthralled" with the history of the 'North-West of this State. She had made some notes during her stay at the station, Lalla Rookh, and hoped one day to include the material in a book. Mrs. White's book, "No Roads Go By" was first published about 20 years ago and has recently been reprinted in London. It describes life on the station in South Australia near the New South Wales border, that her husband managed for seven years. "No-one had lived there before and no-one has lived there since," Mrs. White said. To reach the road it was necessary to cross 35 miles of sand hills in the old model T Ford car which had to be helped up the hills by donkey team. Mrs. White has always "had the itch" to write, but complained that it was "an uphill battle" to get work accepted in Australia. "More masterpieces have gone on the fire than been accepted," she said, "because a writer receives no encouragement from unsympathetic publishers and editors."
