The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889 - 1931) Wed 21 Mar 1900 DEATH OF MR. P.S. HOCKING. At daybreak yesterday morning (says the Kalgoorlie "Miner" of March 9) death came to Mr. Percy Stuart Hocking, and took in him a man whose removal leaves a distinct gap in the roll of goldfields citizens. A short time back Mr. Hocking suffered severely from pneumonia, which left his system very weak and susceptible to further attacks. Thus when he was again laid up with acute pneumonia on Tuesday evening last as the result of a chill, contracted a couple of days previously, he was fated for speedy death. Up to Wednesday night, however, the relatives and friends who could see him saw reason to hope for a successful recovery, but the sufferer sank rapidly, and at sunrise life was gone. The many and manifestly sincere expressions already made towards those most affected by the sad event of yesterday morning prove that the late Mr. Hocking was held in high and general public esteem, for his abundantly displayed fine qualities. Straightforwardness, unselfish and consistent kindliness in word and deed, made friends of all who knew him-whether little or much. Those who had the privilege of intimate acquaintance with him feel Mr. Hocking's decease as a keenly affecting personal loss, and will always give him in memory the place of a best among lost friends. There is not one in the numerous departments ot the various branches of business controlled by Messrs. Hocking and Co. who does not suffer sorrow of a nature that words cannot adequately describe. Mr. Hocking was born at Mount Barker, South Australia, and was the youngest son of the late Mr. Nicholas Hocking. Prior to coming to West Australia he was engaged in business in South Australia, being a well-known member of the Adelaide Stock Exchange. His arrival on these fields dated back to the pioneer days of Coolgardie, when he joined his brother, Mr. S. E. Hocking, who had just founded the "Goldfields Courier" newspaper. When Kalgoorlie was becoming a definite settling place for the first people on these fields, the two brothers disposed of their interests in the Coolgardie newspaper, and went on to Kalgoorlie, rather Hannans, as it was then called, in July of 1895, when they took over the "Western Argus'' news paper; and a couple of months later began to issue the "Kalgoorlie Miner,'" which has from a small beginning at that comparatively recent time grown and developed in a remarkable manner. The success which rewarded the Messrs. Hocking's newspaper ventures extended also to the news agency, stationery, and general printing branches of business, which had been entered upon at the same time. Both before and since the original proprietary was changed into a limited liability company Mr. P. S. Hocking occupied the position of general business manager with unvarying ability and success till his active life was ended at an early age. There are two brothers of the deceased gentleman in Kalgoorlie-Messrs. S E and E. W. Hocking, another, Mr. H. Hocking, is in business in Perth, and a fourth, Mr. M. C. Hocking, is the sporting editor of the South Australian "Advertiser." A fifth brother, Mr Arthur Hocking, resides in Horsham (Victoria), where he has for several years occupied the position of mayor. Also in the colony is Miss Hocking, a sister, whilst a married sister, Mrs. Mills, resides near Horsham (Victoria).
