Transcontinental (Port Augusta, SA : 1914 - 1954) Fri 29 Apr 1932 Death of old Port Augusta Boy Mr. Ernest Henry Lance Hughes recently passed away in the Mitchell Hospital, after being seriously injured while unloading logs at Mitchell (Queensland) sawmill the previous afternoon. The late Mr. Hughes was 47 years of age, having been born at Port Augusta, in 1885. He went to Queensland in 1911, taking up his residence at "Rosebrook" then owned by Mr. G. Klaffus. In 1916 he took up land on the old Waronga estate, and resided around Barabanbel up till the time of his death. "Ernie" was known for many miles rounds He had a very bright, and happy disposition, and a very big heart. At work he stood out on his own, not only being a hard worker, but could turn his hand to anything and make a job of it. As a well-sinker and teamster he had very few equals, and one could never find a better mate with which to work. At social functions he was the leading light, always taking an active part and keeping things going merrily, while at school picnics he was always to be found amongst tbe children, never being too tired to see to their enjoyment. He would travel miles to offer his services (as a player of the accordian) for the dances. He was a member of the Barabanbel School committee since the school was erected in the locality, having at a recent meeting vacated the chair after three years occupation. Every member of the community spoke of the highest esteem and the loss sustained by the district through his ultimely end is most severe. He leaves a widow and nine children - six girls and three boys, the youngest being two years and, three, months old. Mr. Hughes was a son of Mr. H.L Hughes, and a brother of Mr. Don Hughes and Mesdames McAuliffe and O'Loughlin, of Port Augusta.
