CONTEMPT OF COURT.
(Per United Press Association).
WELLINGTON May 15. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, befor Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., a woman named Charlotte Styles applied to have a maintenance order in force against George Stafford Styles varied so as to allow of weekly payments being increased. Defendant. on being called by Mr Luckie, refused to answer questions as to the amount of money he had in the bank. The Magistrate ordered him to answer the question, but he refused point blank, and the Magistrate then ordered that he be taken into custody. He was brought before the Court this afternoon, and again refused to answer the question stating that he would rather go to gaol. His Worship then made an order increasing the payments in respect to the maintenance order by 3s per -week, stating that the defendant's refusal to answer counsel's question implied that he was in a position to pay the increased amount.

CIVIL CASES
Judgment was given against George Stafford Styles, carrier, Kaiwarra, for £31 12s 6d, claimed by Field and Luckie for services rendered and fees paid on account of defendant's wife. Mr. Luckie appeared for plaintiffs. Judgment was also given against Styles for £l9 10s, claimed by Charlotte Styles under an order made under the Destitute Persons Act.
