The death occurred at his home at Mount Benson, on September 6, of Mr. Thomas Hales McGlaughlin in his 73rd year. The deceased was well known in this district, having spent most of his life here. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McGlaughlin, pioneer residents of Robe. The funeral took place on Thursday, September 7, at the local cemetery. Rev. Mr. Miller officiated. Deceased's wife, formerly Miss Annie Ling, died about three years ago. A family of grown up sons and daughters survive, viz., Mrs Kelton and Mrs. H. Martin, of Adelaide; Mrs W. C. The South Eastern Times (Millicent, SA : 1906 - 1954) Fri 15 Sep 1939 Page 3 Mount Benson: Old Resident Passes.- There was a large assemblage of friends and relatives at the graveside of Mr Thomas Hales McGlaughlin, who died at his home at Mount Benson on Wednesday of last week, and was interred in the Robe cemetery on the following day. During his long and active lite, Mr McGlaughlin had enjoyed excellent health, and it was not until within the last few weeks that a series of severe heart attacks gave reason for grave concern. Mr McGlaughlin, who, at the time of his death, was 73 years of age, had spent most of his life in the South-East, and was widely known and possessed many friends. He was a cousin of the famous Australian horseman, Tom Hales, and was himself, during his earlier life, an experienced horseman. He met with a fair measure of success on the turf in association with many of Australia's leading racing men of half a century ago. Possessing a retentive memory, his reminiscences were most interesting. He was keenly interested in all classes of sport, and was an excellent shot and amateur cricketer. Of a generous disposition, he was always willing to help a. friend or assist a worthy cause. For many years he lived at Robe, but later moved to Mount Benson. His wife, formerly Miss A. Ling, of Robe, predeceased him by about five years. There are three sons, Mr T. H. McGlaughlin (Adelaide), Messrs James and Alfred McGlaughlin (Melbourne), and three daughters, Mesdames L. Kelton and H. Martin, of Adelaide, and Mrs W. Anderson, of Mount Benson. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. Mr Brooks, of Kingston, Mr T. G. Brown reading the service of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, of which brotherhood deceased had been a member for many years.
The Narracoorte Herald (SA : 1875 - 1954) Fri 22 Sep 1939 Page 1 The Late Mr. T. H. McGlaughlin. Mr. C. J. D. Smith, M.P., writes as follows: - "The passing of Thomas Hales McGlaughlin, of Mount Benson, removes another pioneer of the Robe district. The deceased gentleman was one of the most interesting personalities I had known, and was a neighbor of many years standing. A cousin of Tom Hales and brother-in law of Sandy Miller, it was not surprising that his early vocation was that of horsemastership. I have heard the late Thos. Artaud, of Struan state that he was one of the best horse judges in the South-East. "The late Mr. McGlauglilin was a ciicket enthusiast of no mean ability, an able debater upon any subject, and probably one of the keenest students of literature in our midst. I shall always retain memories of a good friend, the father of an estimable family, and the husband of one of thei most kindly women that I have ever known. "He was not reared in the purple, and fortune had not always smiled kindly upon him, but he accepted the setbacks with an indomitable spirit, and our district is the poorer through his passing."
