Out Among the People:
. . . .
An Energetic Veteran:
THE inclement weather has little effect on the good spirits of some people, and when I met Mr. Tom Goodenough yesterday he was his usual cheery and energtic self, but he will not have it that this summer is unusual. People always expressed that opinion when we have a cold snap in summer, he said, but it happened quite often, and there was still plenty of time for a good old-fashioned hot spell. He has had plenty of experience, for Tom is in his 84th year and, despite a slight limp, pushes along the street at a good pace, and is anxiously waiting for the fine weather to set in for the Test match. More than 60 years ago he played in the United Tradesmen's cricket team which was one of the first teams in Adelaide. He was later on a cricket umpire and football goal umpire. He has seen all the Test matches played in Adelaide, and is quite confident that Australia will win this one. Mr. Goodenough has spent seventeen years in St. Peters Council and last election scored his biggest poll. "I thought it was time to get out," he said. "They evidently thought my experience and 'youth' were valuable, for they asked me to stand again. I enjoy every moment of it, for I must find something to do.'
Early Adelaide:
Born at sea on July, 1853, Mr Good enough came to Adelaide when he was six months old when his lather began contracting. Many of Adelaide's buildings were built by the firm, and now T. Goodenough and Son are still carrying on. Mr. Goodenough recollects the Botanic Park, then known as the police paddock because the police horses used it, when there were as many as 500 aborigines there. Natives also camped in large numbers at other points along the River Torrens.
