Geralton Guardian Tuesday 9 May 1950 Fierce Winds Havoc DAMAGE BY HAILSTONES Cunderdin Battered in Storm LUCKY ESCAPES Perth. This Afternoon. A violent cock-eyed bob bringing hailstones as large as billiard balls, wiped out a farmhouse and tore the roof and walls from another at Cunderdln yesterday. A mother and three young children were huddled in a corner as the roof and walls were ripped from one of the houses. They were uninjured. In the other a mother and a relative were found under a table which was crushed by falling debris. They received only slight bruises. The storm swept on the district with startling suddenness between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. yesterday. Both farm houses belonged to a Cunderdin farmer (Mr. A. Scaddan). Freakish incidents accompanied the storm. A tank, containing two hundred gallons of water, was swept from a 10 feet stand and hurled for a quarter of-a-mile. A combine, weighing one-and a-half tons, was blown for thirty feet and overturned, while a harvester, weighing two-and-a-half tons, gouged a burrow a foot deep and about forty foot long when it was forced along by the fierce wind. The hailstones broke the tiled roof of a farm owned by Mr. Jack Lundy and dented iron roofs over a wide area. Farmers to-day described the whirl-wind as having been of almost indescribable fury and they marvelled at the luck of the victims in escaping as lightly as they did.
