Will John Hewes (Citizen & Haberdasher of London): 11 March 1588-89 IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN The eleventh daye of Marche in the yeare of our Lord God according to the computation of the church of England one thousand five hundredth four score and eighte And in the one and thirtieth yeare of the Reigne of our Soveraigne Ladye Elizabeth by the grace of God Quene of England France and Ireland defender of the faithe I John Hewes Cittizen and Haberdasher of London being somewhat sick in bodye but perfect in mynde and remembrance Thanks be given to Almighty God therefore Doo make and ordayne this my present testament conteyning my Last will in manner and forme following that is to saye First and principally I comit and comend my soule unto Almighty God my Creator And to our Lord Jesus Christ his sonne my merciful savyour and redemer by whose merits satisfaction and bloodshedding I hope and assuredly to be saved and have remission and forgiveness of all my sinnes And my bodye I comit to the earth in christian buriall to the pleasure of Almighty God Secondly I will that all suche debts as I do owe be well and truly paide by my executors hereafter named And namely whereas I rest debtor unto the Company of the Merchant Adventurers for fifty pounds parcell of two hundred pounds which Roger Knott deceased to whom I was executor did give unto the said Company by his will whiche fifty pounds remaineth in the hands of Robert Bartold merchannt and shalbe due to be paide of in Midsomer next concerning my mynde and will is that the same fifty pounds shalbe retained at the time when it shalbe due and paide over within one and twenty dayes then after unto the said Company according to the will of the said Roger Knott did give and bequeathe for an aquittance to be taken for the same And whereas the said Roger Knott did give and bequeathe forty shillings towards the **reedifying of Pawles Steeple I shall give in hande shall be satisfied and paide unto suche as shall have authority to retain the same according to his will in that behalfe And nowe as touching the disposition of these temporall things wherewith God hath blessed I will give and bequeathe the same as hereafter follows that is to saye First I give and bequeathe to Christes hospitall in London towards the relief of the poore children there kept and harboured the some of three score and six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence uppon conditon that the governors of the saide Hospitall doe not clayme any thing for a parte of the Legacye that the saide Roger Knott gave to the saide hospitall whiche was abated them and paide unto certein Stranngers by grannte from the Quenes majestie I give to the poore harboured in St Thomas' hospitall in Southwark the some of thirty three pounds six shillings and eighte pence

Bothe whiche legacies I will shalbe paide by my executors within Five yeares after my decease according to theire discretions Item I give unto the poore of the parishe of Saint Lawrence in the old Jewry where I am a parishioner the some of six pounds thirteen shillings and foure pence to be distributed within twoe yeares after my decease that is to saye the one halfe thereof eighte dayes before the Feast of the brethe of our Lord God whiche shall next come after my decease and the other halfe eighte dayes before the brethe of our Lord God then next ensuing Item I give and bequeathe to the poore of the parrishe of Newton in the county of Yorke where I was borne the some of six pounds thirteen shillings and foure pence to be paide and distributed unto them as the other Legacie whiche I have given to them of Sainte Lawrence parrishe shouled be at the discretion and oversight of my brother and the parson and church wardens of the parrishe of Newton aforesaid Item whereas the saide parrishe of St Laurence oweth me the sameof seven pounds and fifteen shillings of £101. 10s. whiche I Lent them I doe remitt and forgive them same debt and also do give and bequeathe them Five pounds eleaven shillings and eighte pence more to make it thirteen pounds six shillings and eighte pence whiche I will shalbe imployed abowte the reparacons of that parte of the saide parrishe church whiche the parrishe is bounde to prayer Item I give and bequeathe towards the reparacons of the parrishe of Newton aforesaid the some of thirteen pounds six shillings and eighte pence to be imployed uppon that parte onely whiche the parrishe is bounde to repayer Item I give and bequeathe towards the preferment of six poore maydens dwelling in the saide parrishe of Newton at the time of their marriage the some of £6 that is to saye to every of them twenty shillings to be paide unto them by the advice and discretion of my brother Nicholas Hewes or his sonne Anthony with the parson and church wardens of the saide parrishe of Newton for the time being I give and bequeathe the some of thirty pounds for the release of suche prisoners lying in the twoe Cennters in London Ludgate and the Kings benche being of good report wheare theire dwelling hath bond that may be redeemed for three pounds or under apeece according to the discretion of my executors and overseers Item I give and bequeathe the some of ten pounds to the releife of poore prisoners lying in the saide twoe Cennters in Ludgate and the Kings benche viz. to every of the saide prisons Fifty shillings apeece to be distributed and paide unto them eighte case dayes before the Feast of the Birthe of our Lord God which shall come next after my decease by my executors and overseers Item I give to forty poore maydens in London for theire preferment at the time of theire marriage the some of twenty pounds viz. to every of them tenne shillings apeece at the discretion of my executors Item I give to twenty poore schollers in the universities of Oxford and Cambridge studying divinity and whiche doe minde to be preachers of God's word the some of twenty pounds that is to saye to every of them twenty shillings at the discretion of my executors and overseers Item I give towards the stock for the provision of woode and cole for the poore here in London the some of twenty pounds Item I give and bequeathe to three score and tenne poore men everyone a gowne of clothe of six shillings and eighte pence a yarde good and lacey and ready made for them and though they be not all at my buriall it stilleth not so as suche have them as have most need of them and of this nomber I will that thirty shall be distributed to the poorest sorte of the company of Haberdashers and the rest as my executors and overseers shall think most needfull in theire discretions Also I give unto Robert Engathe my Waterbearer and his wife Foure pounds viz. to either of them forty shillings And I will that he shall have one of the gowns before bequeathed Item to William Tompson my Taylor I give foure pounds Item to Thomas Arnolde Shoemaker foure pounds Item I give unto John Cawman if he be living foure pounds Item I give unto John Skynner citizen and merchant taylor of London dwelling in the parrishe of St Bennette Fynch in London the some of six pounds thirteen shillings foure pence Item I give and bequeathe towards the reedifying of Pawles steeple the some of five pounds to be paide by my executors unto suche as shall have authority to receive the same at suche time as the same worke shalbe in hand and gonne about to be donne Item I give to Nicholas Barley Founder five pounds Item to his sister Elizabeth wyfe to Richard Chawkley three pounds and to theire sister Anne wyfe to one John Phillippse forty shillings Item I give to John Pasfeild my Godsonne five pounds And to so many Godchildren as I shall have living at the time of my decease to every of them foure pounds apeece Item I give to George Whiffock Somne of John Whiffock of Rede in the county of Somerset foure pounds Item to Thomas Purflowe the elder foure pounds Item I will that my executors shall bestowe the some of twenty markes uppon spoones of plate1 for the use of the company of Haberdashers in London and the same plate to be suche as the Wardens of the saide company shall think to be most needfull whiche I will shalbe and remaine to the said company as my gifte for a Remembrance for ever Item I give and bequeathe to the Master and wardens of the saide company of Haberdashers the some of one hundred pounds to remaine as a stock for the use and benefite of poore younge men of the same company whiche I will shalbe delivered and lent within five years after my decease to foure younge men of the same company viz. to every of them twenty five pounds apeece for foure yeares then next ensuing and from foure yeares to foure yeares the said stock to be putt forthe and lent to foure younge men of the saide company for ever the same youngemen paying and allowing yearely to the wardens of the saide company for the time being the some of forty shillings that is to saye every of them foure shillings apeece towards the releife of the poore of the saide company to be distributed at the discretion of the saide Wardens Item I give to Oswald Wakefield the officer to the saide company forty shillings Item to Henry Sherman an other officer twenty shillings And to Henry Shipper the Porter at the gate twenty shillings Item I give to the wife of Mr Ellis Cawman deceased one Ringe2 of gold in value three pounds3 six shillings eighte pence to her sonnes William Grymes and Phillipp Grymes to either of them a Ringe of gold of the same value of three pounds six shillings eighte pence apiece. Item I give Mrs Jane Grimes the wyfe of Mr Thomas Grimes deceased one Ringe of gold of the value of three pounds six shillings eighte pence. Item to her sonne Thomas Grimes my Ringe of gold with deathes heade whiche I had of the gifte of his father and my little cupp of silver parcell gilte with a cover whiche is to taken of at pleasure. Item to her sonne John Grimes and her daughter Elizabeth Grimes to either of them a Ringe of gold to the value of three pounds six shillings eight pence apiece. Item to her daughters Jane Glymes and Mary Grymes And to Elizabeth Purfloe daughter of Thomas Purflowe To every of them a Ringe of gold of the value of fifty three shillings and foure pence apiece. Item I give unto Mrs Margaret Purflowe wyfe of Thomas Purflowe a Ringe of gold to the value of three pounds six shillings eighte pence apiece. Item I give unto Mr Henry Copperfield and his wyfe to either of them a Ringe of gold of the value of three pounds six shillings eighte pence apiece. Item I give to Mr Leonard Hallidaye and his wyfe to either of them a Ringe of gold of the value of three pounds six shillings eighte pence apiece. Item I give unto Gilbert Gardener goldsmith and Lambert Osbolton to either of them a Ringe of gold of the value of fifty three shillings and foure pence apiece. Item I give to Thomas Barker and his wyfe to either of them a Ringe of gold of to the value of forty shillings apiece. Item to Mrs Hardy the wyfe of Robert Hardy a Ringe of gold of forty shillings. Item to John Fabyan merchant a Ringe of gold of forty shillings. Item I give unto William Bank of Wiggen To Thurston Pemberton Frank Dixon Thomas Fryers of Northampton William Marshal of Maydstone John Barker of London Pewterer William Tompson of London peuterer William Lavender of Atherstone John Holmes of Nuneaton and John Smith of Litchfeld to every of them a Ringe of gold to the value of forty shillings apiece. Item I give and bequeathe to my brother Nicholas Hewes the some of fifty pounds and to his wyfe forty shillings. Item I give to his sonne Anthony Hewes my nephew the some of one hundred pounds And to my cosen his wyfe forty shillings
Item I give and bequeathe unto every of the children of my saide nephewe Anthony Hewes the some of thirty pounds apeece to be paide unto them at theire full ages of one and twenty yeares or dayes of mariage And if any of these children dye before theire portons shalbe due unto them Then I will that the same portons of him her or them so deceasing shalbe divided to and amongst the rest that shalbe living parte and parte lyke
Item I give and bequeathe to my sister Cicely Debbe the some of threescore pounds And to her husband five pounds
Item I give and bequeathe to Peter Debbe my nephewe theire sonne the some of one hundred pounds I give to all the residue of my said sister Cicely her children to every of them thirty pounds apeece to be paide unto them at theire full ages of one and twenty yeares or dayes of mariage And if any of them shall happen to dye before theire saide portons shalbe due Then I will that the portons of him her or them so deceasing shalbe divided to and amongst the rest that shalbe living parte and parte lyke And if they all shall happen to dye Then I will that the one halfe of the wholle portons given amongst them shalbe paide unto my saide nephewe Peter Debbe and the other halfe to remaine to my executors for the better performance of this my will Item I give and bequeathe to my sister Jonet Brough the some of fourescore pounds And to her husband five pounds And I do release and forgive him all that whiche he oweth me Item I give and bequeathe to Frances Brough my saide sister Jonetts daughter nowe dwelling with me the some of one hundred markes And to the residue of the children of my saide sister Jonett to every of them I give thirty pounds apeece to be paide unto them at theire full ages of one and twenty yeares or dayes of mariage And if any of these children happen to dye before theire saide portons shalbe due unto them Then I will that the portons of him her or them so deceasing shalbe divided to and amongst the rest that shalbe living parte and parte lyke Item I give and bequeathe to my nephewes Francis Marshall and Robert Marshall sonnes of my sister Margaret to either of them forty pounds apiece Item I give and bequeathe the some of forty pounds towards the education and bringing upp of the child of Anthony M shall deceased who was my nephewe till the forty pounds be spent But if the child shall hereafter be putt to be apprentice or otherwise be provided for without that monethly charge Then I will that so muche as shall remain unbestowed in that sorte shalbe kept together by my executors for the rest to be paide unto him at his age of one and twenty yeares or else be bestowed for his preferment at theire discretion And further I give unto the saide child the some of thirty pounds more to be paide unto him at his full age of one and twenty yeares Item I give and bequeathes to my sister Effam Ford the some of one hundred pounds And to her children William Ford Jane Ford Elizabeth Ford Sara Ford and Margaret Ford every of them fifty pounds apeece to be paide unto them at theire severall ages of one and twenty yeares or dayes of mariage And if any of these five children happen to dye before they shall come to theire severall ages of one and twenty yeares or be married Then I will that the portion of him her or them so dying shalbe divided and paide unto and amongst the rest that shallbe living Item I give and bequeathe unto Robert Dale Haberdasher the some of five pounds And I doe release and forgive him three pounds whiche he is bounde to pay me Also I do release and forgive unto my brother Nicholas Hewes and to his sonne Anthony my brother Peter Brough and my brother Henry Ford and to every of them all further money and debts as they doe now owe unto me Item I give and bequeathe to William Lewes William Adams John Tyler and Ellyn Smetna the servants of Miss Grimes now dwelling with her to every of them forty shillings apeece Item I give and bequeathe unto James Dayne my late servente the some of six pounds thirteen shillings foure pence Item I give and bequeathe to the foresaide Frances Brough my sister Jonetts daughter the some of thirty three pounds six shillings eighte pence more over and above the Legacy aforesaide of 100 markes whiche I have given her to make the some a hundred pounds I give and bequeathe to Mrs Jane Grimes in respect of the trouble of her house the some of forty pounds Item I give and bequeathe unto my nephewe Anthony Hewes the sum of fifty pounds over and above the legacy to him bequeathed before Also my will and minde is that my executors hereafter named shall within one yeare next after my decease with the advise of the overseers of the execution of this my will imploy and putt forthe according to theire good discretion so muche money as whereuppon these maye yearely arise and growe the some of sixttene pounds quarterly to be paide uppon sufficient assurance to given unto them as well for the principall so delivered forthe as also for the annuall payment running of the same And I will that the same stock shall contynue to be so putt forthe during the naturall lyfe of my nephewe George Hewes unto whom I give and bequeathe saide annuall or yearely payment of sixtene pounds for his better maintenance during his naturall lyfe to be paide unto him or his assigns quarterly or within one and twenty after by even portions And after the decease of my saide nephewe George Hewes I will and give the said stock whatsoever it be so imployed by my executors as aforesaide unto my nephewe Peter Debbe and unto William Ford sonne to my sister Effam Ford equally between them twoe to be divided parte and parte lyke And as touching all suche howsehold stuff as I now have my plate excepted I will that the same be as equally as may be divided into three parts every one of as lyke value as possibly may be whiche I give amongst these three viz. my sister Effam Ford my neece Frances Brough and Leonard Brough her brother whom I desyre them to have a friendly consent for the particon provided nevertheless and I do excepte from them out of my saide howsehold stuff the bedsted and the Anndyrons that nowe are in the chamber where I lye bothe whiche I doe give unto Thomas Grimes And also the Settle that is at the saide bed side together with the Stoole covered with Leather in the saide chamber and the little folding table for a Remembrance of my good will towards him Item I give unto Alice Grimes daughter unto Mrs Jane Grimes a chain of gold to be made for her of the value of six pounds thirteen shillings foure pence
The residue of my goods chattells and things not before bequeathed my debts and funerall charges being satisfied I give and bequeathe unto my brother inlaw Henry Ford and to my nephewe Leonard Brough to be equally divided betwene them whiche Henry Ford and Leonard Brough I doe make and ordayne executors of this my last will Trusting that they will frendly agree for the sure performance thereof according to that good hope that I have in them and I doe also ordayne and appoint my very frends Mr John Pasfeild Armorer and William Handley Haberdasher overseers of this my will hartely praying them to be ayding and assisting to my saide executors with theire good advice and counsell for the better execution and performance of the same unto whiche my overseers I doe give and bequeathe towards theire paynes to be taken in that behalfe to either of them twenty pounds apeece notwithstanding the generall Legacy given to my executors Provided allwayes and my will and minde is that if I shall uppon some further consideratons and remembrance give and bequeathe by worde of mouthe before any Witness any Legacye or thing to any person or persons That then the same shall stand and be performed in as good Sorte as if it had bene specially named and sett down in Writing in this my will any generall Legacye to the contrary notwithstanding In witness whereof to this my present testament and last will I the saide John Hewes have sett my hand and seale the daye and yeare above written Per me John Hewes And whereas I the saide John Hewes have not limited time for the payment of some Legaccis by me before in this my will given my minde and will is that the same be not required of my executors over hastely But I will that they be paide within twoe yeares after my decease at the furthest or sooner if my executors coveniently maye Per me John Hewes Sealed delivered and declared by the saide John Hewes as his last will and testament in the presence of these persons viz. By me Jane Grimes Margaret Purflowe By me William Lewes and of me Thomas Allard servant to Lambert Osbolston Scrivener of London CERTEIN LEGACEIS given and bequeathed by the same testator by worde of mouthe after the making of his will whiche he willed should be annexed to his will and parte and parcell thereof Item I give to the poore the third yeare three pounds six shillings eighte pence Item towards the building of some house for the Lame Souldiers if there be any going aboute suche a matter within foure yeares one hundred pounds

Confirmation regarding "HEWES Charity" as at 2022 HEWE'S CHARITY
1. JOHN HEWES, Freeman 1551, gave to the Company, date unknown, £100 to be lent to four young Freemen, £25 each for four years at 2% per annum, the interest to be given to the poor of the Company.
2. £75 of this benefaction was lost in the early 19th Century through failure of principal and sureties.
3. This Charity is now one of the Charities included in "The Haberdashers' Company Loan Fund Bearing Interest Scheme Confirmation Act 1912" under which it is freed from any trust for advancing the same on loans to Freemen of the Company and a sum of £20 (part of a total sum of £960) 22% Consols was provided for answering the annual payments of 10/-d. The endowment of this Charity is therefore £20 Consols standing in the name of the Official Trustees of Charitable Funds.
Today the HEWE's Charity no longer exists.
