MAN WALKS MILE
After Receiving Fatal Injuries
CAR CRASHES THROUGH FENCE Fatal head injuries were received by Clement Hicks, 35, butcher, of Mount Torrens, when his motor car crashed through a post and wire fence and fell 10 ft. to the edge of a creek near Woodside on Friday night or Saturday morning. Bleeding from a severe gash on the left (Side of his head, Mr. Hicks staggered about a mile before he was found wandering, speechless and dazed, on the main road, near Woodside, about 6 a.m. on Saturday by Mr. F. Lauterbach, who was on his way to work.
Taken to the Onkaparinga District Hospital, the injured man underwent an operation, but he died at 3.40 p.m. on Monday. Five wooden fencing posts were knocked out of the ground by Mr. Hicks's single-seater car when it failed to negotiate the gradual curve approach of the concrete Plummer's Creek bridge.
The car also dislodged some cement from the first bridge post. As the car was reduced to a mass of twisted metal, it is remarkable that Mr. Hicks should have emerged from it alive. The car landed on its side, at the water's edge.

The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser (SA : 1880 - 1954) Fri 8 Feb 1935
SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT WOODSIDE
Car Crashes And Driver Killed
While returning from Adelaide on Friday night last the car which Mr. Clement Hicks (35), butcher, of Mount Torrens, was driving crashed into the fence at Plummer's Bridge, and finished up in a creek? about 10 feet below the level of the road.

It is not known what time the accident occurred but at about 6 o'clock on Saturday morning Mr. Hicks was seen staggering along the road about a mile from Woodside and bleeding profusely from, a severe gash in the side of his head by Mr. F. Lauterbach.

He was dazed and speechless and was at once taken to the Woodside Hospital where he underwent operation immediately, but he died on Tuesday. He regained conscious ness for a brief period and was able to teli his name to the hospital authorities.

Mounted Constable Schneider pre pared a report for the Coroner (Mr. P. Richards, J.P.), who deemed an inquest unnecessary.

Five wooden fencing posts were knocked out of the ground by Mr. Hicks' single-seater car when it failed to negotiate the gradual curve ap proach of the concrete Plummer's Creek bridge. The car also dis lodged some cement from the first bridge post. As the car was re duced to a mass of twisted metal, it is remarkable that Mr. Hicks should have emerged from it alive. The car landed on its side at the water's edge.
It appeared that the car had skidded about 20 yards from where it first struck the fence to the point where it toppled over.
A widow and two young children survive.
