Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954) Sat 18 Mar 1922 DEATH OF HENRY ROWE. SUICIDE BY POISONING. EVIDENCE TAKEN IN CAMERA. Dr. Ramsay Smith (City Coroner) on Friday morning conducted an enquiry in the deputation-room, Education Block, into the circumstances surrounding the death of Henry Malcolm Rowe, which occurred at Hamilton, near Gaza, on Monday. Robert Gates, gardener, of Hamilton, gave evidence of identification. The deceased, who was 39 years of age, was a stockman. He was formerly employed as head stockman at the Mount Remarkable Training Farm, and afterwards at the soldiers' settlement there. He had no stated place of residence. The witness last saw him alive at about 6.15 p.m. on March 13, at his (witness') house. The deceased was sitting on a stretcher on the lawn when the witness left home. He said, he was writing a 'few lines' to his wife. When the witness returned at 11.45 the police ambulance was at the house. He had noticed nothing strange about the behaviour of the deceased, who had been to the witness house only twice in 11 months. He found the bottle produce in some bushes at the head of the stretcher on which the deceaeed was lying when he went home. Constable J. Rowett, of Walkerville, said at 11 p.m. on March 13 he received a message, and proceeded to the house of Mr. Gates in Fife-street, Hamilton, where he saw the deceased, who, a boy told him, appeared to have had a fit. In a pocket of the coat the deceased was. wearing, he found some letters, and attached to a writing pad lying on the ground at the head of the stretcher was another letter. Percy William Lines, a youth, of Hamilton, said he saw the deceased lying on the stretcher under Mr. Gates' verandah, about 10 p.m. He was calling for help. His arms and legs were shaking. After vainly endeavoring to secure medical assistance he rang for the police. Dr. A. F. Lynch deposed that he had made a post-mortem examination, of the body, and, in his opinion, death was due to poisoning. He found no other cause of death. The material in-the bottle produced would have caused death. ' At this stage of the proceedings, the coroner ordered the court to be cleared and everybody left the room, except Constable Rowett, a lawyer, and a lady. Proceedings were conducted, in camera for a quarter of an hour, and on the court reassembling, the Coroner informed the press representatives that the evidence taken in open court could be used, but that the proceedings in camera were not to be divulged. He then announced his finding, as follows:- 'That the deceased came to his death from poisoning by his own act.'
The Register (Adelaide, SA : 1901 - 1929) Fri 24 Mar 1922 'A STOCKMAN'S SUICIDE:' In connection with a report in The Register last Friday of an inquest on the body of Henry Malcolm Rowe, who was found dead at Hamilton, near Gaza, last week, it has been suggested in the district (we are informed) that an unnamed woman witness at the Coroner's enquiry (which was conducted in camera) was Mrs. Annie Gates. It has been pointed out that Mrs. Gates was not present at the inquest.
