The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser (SA : 1880 - 1954) Fri 31 Aug 1923 OBITUARY. The death or Mr. J. Otto Stabernack, Tweedvale, occurred on Sunday morning, after an illness extending nearly three years. He was born at Tweed vale (Lobethal) 52 years ago, and when about 11 he engaged at the local woollen mills, and in later years rose to being a foreman in the spinning department, which occupation and position he ably filled until a fortnight prior to his death. He was in the employ of the mills under different managements for 39 years. For three years he had been engaged at hotel-keeping in Western Australia and Victoria, and latterly was the proprietor of the Crown and Anchor Hotel, Adelaide, and Cockburn Hotel. He always took a keen interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of this town and district. He was a member, and later for many years until three weeks ago an auditor, of the local Institute; member of various patriotic committees, vigilance committee, board of control, and later an auditor thereof; a member and secretary of the local Presbyterian Church and board of management, etc. He interested himself keenly in all kinds of manly sports, and held positions which he efficiently carried out as secretary of the local Kingship and Defence Rifle Clubs; secretary and umpire of the Cricket Club. Twenty-nine years ago he was married to Miss Alice McLean, third daughter of the late Mr. Hughie McLean, of Meningie. Four years ago a 20-year-old and only son, Clifford, predeceased him, having met with a fatal railway accident at Croydon Station. A sorrowful widow and only daughter. Miss Reta, survive.
