There was a good attendance at the organ and choral recital given at the Presbyterian Church of St. Andrew yesterday afternoon. The organist was Mr. J. Penn Hughes, from the "Astra" Theatre, Parramatta, and his programme, if somewhat "more popular than is often the case in organ recitals, had the merit of containing works that are well-known, melodious and generally appreciated. His opening numbers were "Rustle of Spring", (Linding), appropriately selected, and Dvorak's favourite "Humoresque." The Kreisler group followed, featuring "Liebesfreud," "Caprica Viennois" and "Schou Rosaria" - three pieces that have always an immediate appeal. Chopin was represented by his A major "Polonaise," in which Mr. Hughes effectively, brought out the contrasting mortial themes, and Mendlessohn by his immortal "Spring Song." His concluding numbers were Schubert's ''Marche Militaire" - a decided favourite at organ recitals, and "The Lost Chord" by Sullivan, which it is pleasing to hear revived. As Mr. Hughes is a theatre organist, his technique is along lines that differ somewhat from those adopted by church organists, and for this reason his recital was found interesting and enjoyable, and it showed up new capacities in the organ.
The Choir contributed four vocal numbers that provided a contrast to the instrumental items, and were much appreciated. These comprised "Open Thy Gates" by Harrison, - "I Waited for the Lord" by Mendelssohn, (solos by Mesdames Welch and Murray), Purcell's "Thou Knowest Lord," and Bach's popular chorale "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Accompaniments were played by Mr. C. S. Daley, the hon. Church organist.

New Organist For Regent Theatre
To take over the post of organist at Hoyts Regent Theatre, in place of Mr Clarence Black, Mr. Penn Hughes arrived with Mrs. Hughes in the express from Melbourne yesterday. He will begin his duties tomorrow. Mr Hughes who was born in Adelaide, left here 12 years ago, after experience as an organist for silent films. His most recent engagement was with Hoyts Plaza Theatre, Sydney, before which he was organist at the Civic Theatre, Auckland. He said yesterday that the organ at the Civic was mounted on a narrow platform, which was raised on a hoist 40 feet in the air. "One felt more like an acrobat than an organist" he said. Mr Hughes said that he had not come to the Regent to educate people, but to entertain them. Most of his selections would be illustrated with screen slides - most of which he made in his spare I time as a hobby - and he would also sing through the microphone. He will appear at the afternoon and evening sessions. After his Adelaide engagement, Mr. Hughes has been engaged to return to the Civic in Auckland.

Young Adelaide Song-Writers' Success
Songs written by Adelaide's youngest song writing team- two youths aged 17 and 18 were broadcast by South Australian radio stations this week. The composers, Ern Wordley, who writes the words, and John Eddy, who supplies the music, are delighted with the success which has come their way in the last few days. They are at work on more songs. They wrote about eight numbers before much notice was taken of their work, although the Regent Theatre organist, Penn Hughes, showed an interest from the beginning of their venture. Penn Hughes, singing to his Wurlitzer accompaniment, recorded one or two songs for the young composers, but the records were not played in public. But now, within a week, 5AD and 5KA have broadcast 'Remember to Smile,' recorded from the Regent by a special hook-up with the 5AD studios. It was sung by Hilda Saffra, accompanied by Penn Hughes. Tomorrow at the Maughan Church Red Cross service two other songs by these young writers will be sung by Gwen Collett 'Shoulder to Shoulder' and 'When the Great Big World Wakes Up.'

'Amateur Hour' Stars in Perth
At the Ambassadors this week there is an excellent stage presentation comprising four selected stars from Australia's Amateur Hour, which is a well-known radio feature conducted by Harry Dearth.
Hoyts Theatres, realising the value of these trials in encourag- ing local talent, are doing their part by giving the aspiring stars the chance to appear before theatre audiences, and this quartet is the first of a series to be brought to the West, Mr. Penn Hughes, the compere, who is heard in songs at the organ, introduces Peggy Maguire, the 14 year-old Singing Cowgirl; Elsie Browne, torch singer; Kay Lager low, impersonator of artists; and Freddie Lane, impersonator and mimic Elsie Browne is an Adelaide girl, the three other artists hailing from Sydney. The four young artists are fulfilling their first engagement at the Ambassadors, and are delighted at visiting Perth.

Amateur Hour
Three more outstanding artists who made their bow to the Australian public on the famous radio programme, "Australia's Amateur Hour," will open a season at the Ambassadors on Friday next. The new unit consists of Fay Newton, the finest instrumental mimic that Australia has produced, Kevin McMahon and McGinty, a fine ventriloquial act, and a magnificent baritone voice in Don Canham.
The unit will be presented and compered by the popular Penn Hughes, who, incidentally, is providing great entertainment with his Wurlitzer organ presentation.
Current show at the Ambassadors features Elsie Browne, Peggy Maguire, Roy Lagerlow and
Freddy Lane, Amateur Hour stars.
At present screening is the thrilling adventure film "Man Hunt;" boasting a strong cast beaded by Walter Pidgeon and Joan Bennett.
Joan Bennett, as a Cockney speaking "girl Out of the shadows" turns in one of the best performances she's ever done. In support is "Sleepers West," another Detective Shayne story, with Lloyd Nolan, Lynn Bari and Mary Beth Hughes.

Jack Penn Hughes originated from South Australia and was a professional theatre organist throughout the 1930s-1940s until the late 1950s featuring at many organs reviewed in this series, particularly in Sydney but also in New Zealand. He was also known as the "singing organist". His last theatre residence was at the Plaza theatre, Sydney. Despite his musical talents, many found him to be personally irascible, and in his dealings with redundant theatre organs he bordered on the unconscionable. In all some 12 organs were acquired by him and sold on to others, it being claimed that the purchasers did not always receive the organs they expected, Hughes having retained the best features for himself. He has also been identified in the late 1930s with involvement in the installation of instruments in theatres, eg the Astra theatre, Parramatta, and the Astra theatre, Drummoyne.
In about 1957 Hughes bought the 2/10 Christie organ from the Empire (later St. James) theatre, Dunedin, New Zealand, and in 1959 he acquired the 2/8 Wurlitzer organ (opus #748) previously in the Plaza theatre, Sydney. These two organs formed the basis of his residence organ, initially utilising the Empire Christie console. Later, Hughes acquired the 4 manual secondary console previously installed with the WurliTzer organ (opus #1987) of the State theatre, Melbourne, Victoria, and connected it to his residence organ. The 2 manual Christie console was acquired by the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (Queensland Division) and rebuilt as a 3 manual console for its Christie organ (originally of 8 ranks from the Granada theatre, Maidstone, UK) and installed in the Kelvin Grove high school, Brisbane, Queensland.
The Hughes music room was 44ft deep and could hold 160 people. Concerts were given there by some notable theatre organists including Lyn Larsen, Tony Fenelon, and John Atwell.
In 1967 the organ was sold to Mike Pfizner for his residence in Darwin, Northern Territory. Although it was worked on by Mike and his friends for seven years, there were several severe floodings that prevented fulfilment of his dream. Mike offered the organ to the South Australian division of The Theatre Organ Society of Australia, and it was removed in November 1974 - only 4 weeks before the devastating Cyclone Tracey that demolished the Pfizner home.
The organ has since been installed in TOSA's Capri theatre, Goodwood (suburb of Adelaide) South Australia, and enlarged to 29 ranks. It is unique in having glass-fronted chambers to enhance the audience's
experience of organ presentations. 4/16 console at Darwin

Marjorie Louise HUGHES - my mother - recorded by Mary Anderson
Marjorie Louise was born at Cherry Gardens in December 1902, she was the eldest of seven children. At some time between 1904 and 1906 the family moved to the city and lived at various addresses at Payneham and North Adelaide. Marjorie trained as a primary school teacher. In those days that training was learning on the job alongside a qualified teacher in a classroom situation. In 1921 when she was considered 'trained' her career began and records show she taught as Nailsworth, Clare, Plympton, Waikerie, Nairne, Walkerville Schools, with a second and final stint at Nairne.
During her single days, Marjorie and a number of her teaching contemporaries travelled during their holidays to Sydney and Hobart. Under Events many of her old photographs are displayed; some taken at picnics in the hills and others as beach-belles at the seaside.
I believe Marj and Don Anderson met playing tennis - in any event they married on 10 April 1938 at Maughan Church Franklin Street Adelaide. For Marj this changed her life dramatically as in those days a female working in a Government position had to resign when they married!
They made their home at Price Weir Ave Allenby Gardens where they reared a family of three children. Marj and Don provided a home of love, nurture and care; being prosperous to that end, but few luxuries. Good work ethics and musical talents were encouraged.
Marj's 1938 Electoral Roll Card and her 1944 Identity Card are still extant and can be seen in the Events Gallery.
When her children married and moved away in the 1960s Marj and Don eventually sold their home of 30 years and bought a unit which was part of the Southern Cross homes at Portrush road. When Don died in 1976 Marj moved into full-time care at Southern Cross Homes at Marion road Plympton where she remained until her death in 1988.

Don was born at Goodwood; he went to Thebarton Primary School. His schooling finished when his father died in December 1913. He began work in an office but that job was curtailed when he turned 18y and was required for Military training.

(exerpt of letter written by Mary Ann Anderson (nee Gunter) to her son, Harry Anderson, 20 Nov 1917, image 313) -
"Don has to go into camp next month for 8 days; by rights he should be going Friday, but he can't be spared as two others are going from the same office, so he has to go with the Broken Hill & Port Pirie lot & he does not relish it".
(Don's children were unaware of his working in an office or that he had any WW1 Army Training, but it is likely that he did as he turned 18y on 5 Nov 1917.)

At the time of his first marriage Don was a driver delivering bread by horse and cart for Frank Leane, baker at Southwark.
At the time of his second marriage he was working for Frank Leane, but later, and closer to home he worked for Davies Coop Cotton Mill at Kilkenny, and later for G H Michell at Hindmarsh.
During his working life Donald was a member of the Rachabite Lodge which was to provide assistance to his family should anything unforseen happen to him.

My first memories of my father were of him coming home at breakfast time from work (he worked three shifts) at the Cotton Mills - Davies Coop, opposite East Avenue and next to Kilkenny Primary School where we children Ross, Colin and Mary all eventually went. After some time he worked for G.H. Michell in Adams Street, Hindmarsh (only two shifts, I think). He was a bit of an old bower bird, he brought home all the bolts and nuts he found in the wool bales and stored them in an old aluminium pot, which we all used years later when we were old enough to buy cars.
Friday nights when he had been to the pub "The Hope Inn" he would sing coming up the side of the house and if tea was cold he would hear about it. On the weekends our families from both sides would come and visit, among them was his sister, Gell, (Jessie) and they would sit around the old wood stove drinking, she Sherry, him Port. How she drove home sometimes I'll never know. Her car was a late 40s Ford Anglia which had the same set of tyres on it after 40 years according to Dad.) After a big Sunday roast Dad would fall asleep at the dinner table and wake up when visitors came.
He always tried to grow some veggies in the backyard, some successfully, some not so, but we had trees, orange and lemon which we helped plant - I remember we saved up all our old used fruit tins and buried them where the trees were to be - there was also a large apricot, peach, quince, almond and fig trees. The almond trees were in the chook yard (½ doz. chooks for eggs), and an old septic tank upended for an incinerator. Grape vines grew on a trellis across the back of the house which provided shelter during the hot summer days.
As Colin and I were growing up we needed a separate bedroom to the one we all slept in, so we helped Dad enlarge and enclose the back verandah, clad, line and paint before moving in (it did not require Council approval because they never got to hear of it).
We also had a rainwater tank that leaked until Mum's brother-inlaw, Uncle Ken, rendered the inside which made it usable again - Dad was pleased, as in those days ordinary folk had to look out and do for themselves.
After we all married Dad never finished jobs that he started around the home, so he and Marj sold up and went to live in Southern Cross Homes on Port Rush Road, Evandale until he died on 27 March 1976, then Mum moved to Southern Cross Homes, pre-Nursing Home accommodation, at South Plympton.

On the day that Laurence Vincent Hughes turned the age of 14 years he announced to his teacher that he was old enough to leave, and so he did. It is not known exactly what his first employment was but he eventually entered the retail world and became a salesman selling manchester. Before WW2 he was picking fruit up river and when paid at the end of a working week, would go to the nearest town to socialise. On one occasions he was offered a ride into town and as a result of the car rolling over, Laurie broke his back and was confined to Mildura Hospital on his back for two years. When he walked again he only shuffled but later his wife trained him to walk properly. He did join the Army but a medical officer recognised him from his time in hospital and he was unable to pass the medical test.

2/27th Battalion
The headquarters of the 2/27 Battalion opened for the first time at Woodside in South Australia on 7 May 1940. On 19 October the battalion left Woodside, by train, for Melbourne where it sailed for overseas on 21 October. After a brief stop in India en-route, the 2/27th disembarked in Egypt on 24 November and moved straight to Palestine to complete its training.
As part of the 21st Brigade of the 7th Australian Division, the 2/27th's first operational assignment of war was to bolster the defences along the Egypt-Libya frontier against an expected German attack. It occupied positions at Maaten Bagush and Matruh throughout much of April and May 1941, before returning to Palestine in preparation for its first offensive operation - the invasion of Syria and Lebanon, which began on 8 June.
The 2/27th was employed in the drive north along the Lebanon coast but most of its operations were outflanking moves in the hills that edged the coastal plain. Its major actions were at Adloun on 11 June, Miyeoumiye on 13-14 June and around El Boum, as part of the battle of Damour, between 6 and 9 July. After the armistice of 12 July, the 2/27th remained in Lebanon as part of the Allied garrison until 11 January 1942.
After sailing from Egypt on 30 January 1942, the 2/27th disembarked in Adelaide on 24 March. The battalion's stay in Australia, however, was brief. On 14 August it arrived at Port Moresby in Papua, and by 6 September it was in position at Mission Ridge on the Kokoda Trail preparing to meet the relentless advance of the Japanese. The battalion held on to its positions for two days before being forced to pull out by a Japanese outflanking move that cut the Trail behind it. A grim 2 week withdrawal through the jungle, with little food, followed. Sick and exhausted, the 2/27th rejoined the main Australian force at Jawarere, 40 kilometres east of Port Moresby, on 22 September.
After a period of rest and retraining the 2/27th returned to action at Gona on 28 November. It suffered heavily in series of rushed and ill-conceived attacks and was further assailed by the ravages of tropical disease. By the time it was relieved on 6 January 1943, it was only 70 strong.
The 2/27th returned to Australia in mid-January but was back in Papua by early August. It spent a month training near Port Moresby before being flown to Kaipit in New Guinea to take part in the advance along the Ramu Valley. Leaving Kaipit on 29 September, the 21st Brigade reached Dumpu on 4 October and then began pushing up into the Finisterre Ranges. The 2/27th occupied several key features during these operations and bore the brunt of the one major counterattack launched by the Japanese on 12 October. Thereafter,the 2/27th's operations were principally patrol actions. It began returning to Port Moresby on 3 January 1944, and arrived back in Australia on 1 March.
The 2/27th left Australia for its last operation of the war on 3 June 1945. The battalion landed at Balikpapan on 1 July and after the attacks of that day, conducted with relatively light casualties, its operations were confined mainly to small-scale patrolling until the end of the war on 15 August. From mid-October to late January 1946 the 2/27th formed part of the occupation force in the Celebes. St. George's Cathedral was ths scene of a picturesque wedding on Saturday, May 2, when Beryl Violet, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Grounds-Weston, of Albany road, Kelmscott, was married to Lloyd Ryder, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Hughes, of Cannington. The bride, through the unavoidable absence of her father, was given away by Mr. Hector Goudie. Slim and petite, the bride entered the church wearing a classical frock of magnolia bridal satin, fashioned with unusually cut dolman sleeves and a cowl neck line. The skirt was cut on the cross with no side seams, and was beautifully pieced at the back to let the long train fall. She wore an exquisite tiara of orange blossom and iridescent tiny pearls, from which fell a billowing veil five yards long, which was richly embroidered, with lace, leaves and roses. She carried a shower bouquet of roses and maidenhair fern, faintly tinged with pink. Her attendants were Miss Lois Weston (sister of the bride), Miss Muriel Hughes (sister of the bride-groom) and Miss Lois Raston of Tammin. They were frocked alike in picture frocks of heavy duck egg blue georgette, the sleeves of which formed an unusual feature, being braided in silver and studded with rhinestones. They wore short veils of matching tulle, with a spray of autumn flowers on the side of the head. They carried muffs of silver, covered with matching ruched tulle and ornamented with autumn flowers. Silver kid shoes completed their toillets. Mr. Kent Hughes was best man, and Mr. Bill Lantzke and Mr. Ross Raston were groomsmen. After the ceremony Mrs. Grounds-Weston entertained about 150 guests in the Kelmscott Hall, wearing a frock of heavy navy blue georgette figured with leschenaultia. She wore a smart hat to tone, and carried red roses. Mrs. Hughes (mother of the bridegroom) ably assisted, wearing a smart frock of rust red dull crepe with gold ornaments. She wore a chic hat to tone, and carried autumn-shaded flowers. During the evening dancing and games were enjoyed, the music being supplied by Mr. R, Hatch's orchestra. Later the happy couple left for their honeymoon by car for a month's tour of the South-West, the bride wearing a chic frock and coat of dusty red Roubaix, with a cute little halo hat to match. Beige accessories and furs completed her toilet. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hughes are well known in the sporting world, Mrs. Hughes, better known as Beryl Weston, being a National and State diving and swimming champion, and Mr. Hughes is a keen tennis player, foot-baller, and cricketer. They will reside in their new home at Kelmscott.

CABRA ANNUAL FETE
On Saturday, October 20, the annual Cabra Fete was opened by Mr. K. Bardolph, M.L.C. The day was a great success, both socially and financially, as the added attraction of sideshows gave a very festive air to Cabra and the beautifully stocked stalls were great means of raising a substantial sum of money. The main feature of the fete was the
baby competition, which had aroused a lot of interest, and caused a great deal of excitement at the finish. The winning baby was Kathryn Hughes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Hughes, of Glandore. Mrs. Hughes and her helpers on the sweets stall raised £227, which was a magnificent effort. The other mothers, Mrs. O'Flahertie, Mrs. Carrig, Mrs. O'Loughlin, Mrs. Hughes, and Mrs. Sawyer, and all the members of the various stalls also worked very hard in helping to raise the £690 which was the result of the competition. Gifts were presented by Mrs. F. Walsh and Mrs. D. Moriarty to each of the six babies in the competition. The Cabra Parents' Committee wishes to thank all those who helped in any way to make the fete the outstanding success it was. The stalls consisted of produce, cake, fancy, afternoon tea, children's, and sweets.

My Father, Leonard John Caldicott, was born (12 August 1892), and bred at Lenswood. "When he grew up he worked as an orchardist with his Father and three brothers. On the 11th June, 1924, he married Kathleen Alice Hughes, (born 16 August 1900), from North Adelaide where her Father had run mixed business in Childers Street. She was a trained Infant Teacher.

On the 3rd April, 1927, I was born at the Memorial Hospital at North Adelaide and named June Lynette. I had a very happy childhood with loving parents, a Grandmother living with us, and Mother's sister living not far away.

For many years Mother and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Os. Caldicott, were very good tennis players and played for Lenswood in the Hills Association and also in any championships around. My cousin Fay and I were usually taken with them. Mother said I was so shy I sat on the seat and hardly moved, so I was as clean going home as when I started. Auntie Glen wouldn't own Fay as she used to be in everything including sifting dirt through her frock. Sometimes Auntie Glen would drive us to tennis with the horse, Tommy, and sulky. This was fun as Fay and I would kneel on the floor of the sulky behind the horse as Auntie Glen had him flying along. We usually went to Lobethal to Dr. Jungfer's or down the Swamp Road to Mr. Allan Vickers' as they both had their own courts.

School was a great time for me for at last, I had plenty of playmates. I had a mile to walk to school and usually met up with other children on the way. The year I started, 1933, was the year the Lenswood Cold Stores were opened. I used to pass that corner on the way to school and can remember when there was only my Great-grandparents' house on the corner and the small cowshed down by the creek. Now there's a huge Cold Store there.

There were still a great deal of uncleared scrub around in those days and being an only child and plenty of time on my hands, I used to love to wander over the hills picking wild flowers, or else down in the creek trying to catch tadpoles and frogs.

When I was in Grade IV, 1936, we had to go to the Institute to school as the two old primary rooms at Forest School were being demolished and two new classrooms, a woodwork room and lunch room were being built. What a thrill to have a new school.

1936 was a sad year for us too, as my Grandmother Hughes died after a long illness and Mother's brother, Will, from Melbourne, died too.

In 1940 I started at Adelaide High School. When Mother took me to be enrolled she introduced me to all the teachers she'd had when she was at the school and I got to know them all well.

Twice during my high school years Mother was very ill. In 1942 I boarded with Mrs. Bright and her daughter, Esther, who had been a teacher at Lenswood and boarded with us. The second time, the following year, I boarded with Auntie Maude at Basket Range for the four months Mother was in hospital. I had a happy time there as I was treated like one of the family and it was as if I had a brother and three sisters. I used to go home at weekends and do the housework while Dad went down to see Mother in hospital. Dad would come home late Sunday night and I would be off to school Monday morning, so I didn't see much of my parents at this time.

After I left high school I went to Burrough's College and did all their machines and when I graduated I got a position on the Calculators at W.D. & H.W. Wills. I thoroughly enjoyed my work there as we had such a variety of things to do.

I 'd been working there about two years when I got engaged to Ralph Lawrence Arney. Ralph was the eldest son of Norman Arney, who was the second son of William Henry Arney. Will Arney had married Mother's half-sister, Louise, his second wife.

Ralph and I had known each other as children but met again at this Grandfather's when we were both boarding with them. Ralph had bought property at Klemzig when he got out of the Air Force after the war and was boarding with his Grandfather while he was building a shack on it. He had spent his childhood at Wanbi in the Murray Mallee where his Father had had a farm.

In March 1947 I had to leave work to look after Mother who was once more very ill. I spent twelve months at home then on the 13th March, 1948, Ralph and I were married and lived in the shack at Klemzig. We had been married just one year when our daughter, Margaret Anne, was born on the 28th March 1949. At this time Ralph was working with Woodroffe as a plumber. We made additions to the shack and it was very comfortable. When Anne was 12 months old we sold this property and bought a block closer to the main road and a built garage on it where we lived intending to build a house.

My parents were on the move too. They were staying with Aunt Lou while building a house at Broadview, so we saw a great deal of them.

On 21st December 1950 our son, John Lawrence, was born. That was the day the foundations for our house went down. Ralph had organized a group to help him lay it so he was working all day and didn't get in to see him new son. Mother and Dad were thrilled to be grandparents again.

By the end of March my parent's house was almost completed. The carpets had been laid and all the new furniture Mother had chosen was due to arrive the first week in April and their new car was due shortly after. Unfortunately Mother never lived in her new house as she had a bad heart attack and died on the 1st April 1951 at Aunt Lou's. Dad moved into the house but spent a lot of time at Aunt Lou's and at the Broadview Bowling Club. Luckily he'd been a member of the Club since coming to Adelaide and it helped a great deal.

We stayed at Klemzig until August 1951 when Ralph got a job at Clinton Centre with Tom Correll on his farm. Tom had five farms and we lived in the homestead of one of them. We'd both been brought up in the country and loved the life and had two very happy years there, and on the 27th March, 1953, our youngest daughter, Mary Lynette, was born at the Ardrossan Hospital.

Ralph's parents had left Wanbi in the Mallee by this time and had a farm at Angle Vale. Ralph's younger brother, Glen, had been home helping his Dad but he was marrying and going to Peake to live. With his wife's Grandparents he was going to run the Peake Post Office. Dad asked Ralph to take his place and share farm the property but after nine weeks trial we returned to Clinton Centre for another twelve months.

Ralph then had an offer to work from his old firm of Woodroffe's so we came back to Adelaide to live. We purchased a new house at Clearview and had to stay a couple of weeks at Angle Vale as the house was not quite ready. While we were waiting at Dad's there was quite a large earthquake (the first I'd ever experienced) and we wondered if we'd have a house to move into. However, we were lucky and our house was intact and we moved in on the 4th March, 1954.

We'd only just got settled when Woodroffe's put Ralph in charge of their operations in Port Pirie. They were doing the plumbing on the Uranium Works, the new Men's Wing of the Hospital and had to put in one hundred septic tanks for the Housing Trust as the City was doing away with the "night carts." For the first eight months Ralph lived in Woodroffe's house with the other workmen who were on the job with him, and came home once a fortnight. In "February 1955 we all moved up with him and any workmen who came after that lived in a caravan on the property.

On 14th May 1955 my Father married Phyllis Ramsay. He met her at the Bowling Club and she used to partner him in mixed foursomes with Mr. & Mrs. McGregor. I was very pleased at the time as I worried about him living on his own and we were so far away.

We had three years at Pirie and while there saw quite a bit of the surrounding country, made a lot of friends and found a few relatives as well.

Grandfather Caldicott's brother Jack, had built and lived in the house back to back with us but had moved out the year before to live with his daughter. One of his grandsons, Brian Scarman, married and came to live opposite. Jack Caldicott, one of Uncle Jack's sons, was a plumber and Ralph got to know him.

I used to go to the Y.W.C.A. crafts night each Tuesday and I met Mrs. Gwen Raw. Her husband Cyril was manager for Coco Cola Bottlers in Pirie. Gwen was a grand-daughter of Robert Caldicott, another of my Grandfather's brothers.

When the work was finished in Pirie, Ralph was offered a job as Health Inspector with Graham Rehn and Associates. Being a qualified plumber helped, as they did building and weed inspection as well, but he had to do the Royal Society of Health exam which was a London exam. It was usually a two year course but Ralph did it in one and got highest marks ever in South Australia for that exam.

It was hard work studying as well as working but very interesting as he travelled all over S.A. Graham Rehn and Associates were free lance inspectors doing the work for country councils who didn't have enough work for a full time inspector.

After working for two years with Graham an opportunity to teach plumber's came up and so Ralph joined the Education Department. This meant more study but Ralph was a born teacher and enjoyed young people. Unfortunately their school workshop house three noisy trades, plumbers, panel beaters and sheet metal workers and finally he had to stop teaching as the noise was affecting his hearing. He returned to Health Inspecting again with Graham.

He only stayed with them for twelve months as a change to get back into teaching came. They had changed premises in his absence and had a better workshop. He was only back a couple of months when he was sent to Mt. Gambier. Mt. Gambier was being sewered which meant all the plumbers had to do the course and be registered to be able to do sewerage work.

We thoroughly enjoyed our four years there. We had been told Mt. Gambier had its levels of society and that was so but we were fortunate to bridge them all. From Mt. Gambier we had many caravanning holidays and explored a lot of Western Victoria and Southern Australia.

The children were all doing well at school and Anne had gained scholarships in her last years at High School and decided to take up a teaching career. In 1967 she came to Adelaide to board and did first year University arts course. The second year she dropped university and did the Teachers College internal course. She had a happy time at College excelling in Maths and Physics and played hockey where she was secretary of the Club. In 1971 Anne gaine her Dip. T. and was sent to Snowtown Area School to teach.

By this time we were back in Clearview; we returned in 1968. About this time the house and block at Broadview were getting too big for my Father to manage and he and Phyl bought a unit at Klemzi, part of the Aged Cottage Homes. It was a lovely unit, on the end of a block so they were able to have a carport right next to it. There was a small plot where they could have a garden but all the lawns etc. were maintained for all the units. Dad bought himself a new car so they were all set up.

In 1970 our son John also decided to make teaching his career but instead of High School arts he went for High School Physical Education as he loved his sport. He'd done well at hockey in Mt. Gambier where he'd played for Mt. Gambier in the Country Carnival which they won and he was named best player for the match. He continued playing hockey when we returned to Clearview, first for Enfield then for Adelaide Teachers College. In 1970 he went with the College team to Perth - the first 1st year student to go interstate with a College team. The same year he was chosen for the State squad to go to Queensland but finances and studies prevent this.

In 1972 John got his Dip T. (Phys. Ed.) and was sent to Port Pirie High School where he continued his studies for another two years and gained his Advanced Diploma. In October that year he became engaged to Virginia Margaret Wright, another Phys. Ed. graduate who was teaching at Risdon Park, Port Pirie.

In the meantime our youngest daughter, Mary, left High School and went to Business College and graduated on the Comptometer. She got a position with Eudunda Farmers which she held for about six months, then was called in the Commonwealth Bank where she stayed until she was married.

Mary Lynette was the first of our family to be married. She married Damir Varovcic on the 10th July, 1971. They had a flat at Frewville and Damir had a job as storeman with Myers. Their first son, Simon Leigh, was born on 6th September, 1972. He was a happy little soul and thoroughly spoiled being the first gtandchild. Their second son, Damir Cichael, was born 27 December, 1972. The flat was too small with two children, so they moved to a larger house at Thebarton. As money was short Mary went to work and the boys were at a nursery during the day. In February 1973 both Mary and Damir gave up their jobs and packed as many of their possessions that they could in their car, stored the rest with a friend and with all the money they had in the world, $150 they headed for Port Lincoln looking for work.

Damir was fortunate to get a job as packer with the railways at Minnipa. There was a house that went with the job for $5 per week, so until they could get to Adelaide to collect some furniture they camped in the house as best they could. After 2 years at Minnipa, Damir got promotion to Burra, a pretty little spot in the mid-north.

They spent two years at Burra, then had two years in Tarcoola in the hope they could save a bit of money from the higher wages. We paid them a visit while they were there. The trip up on the Indian Pacific was an experience and we arrived about 4.30am nearly an hour late. By the time we'd had coffee and something to eat we were still talking when Damir said he had to "run the Line" at 6am so Ralph went with him. He was very interested in the trip as the new Tarcoola to Alice Springs line was still being built and a lot of machinery and materials were stored at Tarcoola.

We were taken out to a gold mine which is still being worked onm the site of the original Tarcoola township. It was believed in the early days that Tarcoola was going to be another Kalgoorlie but it was not to be. The Hotel, the Church and Queen's Hall had been moved three times from the original town as the town followed the gold.

In July 1980 the family moved to Gladstone where Damir was a ganger. They were gradually getting closer to Adelaide but promotion was getting harder to get. In June 1982 they were transferred to Lameroo where Damir is Ganger-length runner. This will probably be the last move for a while as the boys are now both at High School and promotion is getting harder in the Railways. They are fortunate Lameroo is a pretty town and has a good Area School and it is near enough to get to Adelaide in a day if need be. After living in the country for so long they don't want to come back to the city to live.

John Lawrence was the next one married. He and Virginia Margaret Wright were married on the 5th May, 1973 in Adelaide and lived at Port Pirie where they were both teaching. Christopher Leigh, their first child, was born at Pirie on 14th November, 1975. While still living at Pirie their second child, Kerry Louise, was born at Port Broughton on 26th May, 1978.

In January 1979 John was transferred to Wirreanda High School at Morphett Vale. For the first six months they lived at Aldinga Beach in a shack owned by Virginia's father, Harold Wright. Then they bought a house in Alice Crescent, Morphett Vale, close to the school and moved in in July 1979. On the 30th September 1980, their second daughter, Sarah Jayne, was born at the Flinders Medical Centre. Virginia did not give up teaching all together but did any part time teaching she could fit in.

They all enjoyed their time at Morphett Vale and at Wirreanda High where John had a wonderful gymnasium and Phys. Ed. centre. It was the first one of its type built to show what could be done and it had everything. We were very surprised when we went to help Mary and family moved to Lameroo that the school there were putting the finishing touches to a gymnasium of the same type as at Wirreanda.

In January 1984 John was promoted to Senior Master and transferred to Whyalla Eyre High School. They are living at Whyalla Jenkins and all being well their fourth child will arrive on 10th November, 1985.

Margaret ANNE who had gone to Snowtown to teach met Raymond John Woodhouse the postman, and they were married on the 4th May, 1974, at Archer Street, North Adelaide. They lived in Snowtown where Anne continued teaching for a couple of years.

In December 1977 Ray was in hospital seriously ill with a virus. He had had Hodgkinsons Disease some years previously and always had problems with viruses and getting his temperature down. While he was in hospital Anne was also admitted. She had only three weeks to go before her first baby was due but unfortunately she lost it.

In January 1979 Ray was transferred to the Blackwood Post Office and so they bought a house at Reynella. Anne was pregnant again and fortunately was going to the Flinders Medical Centre as once again she was having trouble and had to spend the last five weeks in hospital. The on 23rd May 1979 Amy Nicole was born.

In 1981 Ray went into the Australia Post School for six months to gain further qualifications. When that was over he had to go on the relieving staff as his job at Blackwood had been filled. Ann was pregnant once again and on the 9th December, 1981, Michael John Raymond, was born, this time luckily she had no problems.

Early in 1982 Ray applied for and got the position of Postal Clerk at Leigh Creek South. They moved up there in June 1982. They enjoyed their time there as they were involved with sport and the Church so had a very full life. In late 1984 the Leigh Creek Post Office was upgraded and the position of Postal Clerk was abolished so Ray was transferred to Keith in the South East in January 1985, where they bought a house. They are enjoying life there very much.

While the family had been getting married and moving etc. we remained at Clearview. Ralph was teaching at the Plumbing Trade School until he retired in January 1981. I had had a part time job as "tea lady" at the Highways Department from 1968-1973 then after a break of 18 months I worked at the Royal Overseas League for five years from 1975-1980 as Kitchen Supervisor. This was a very interesting position as I met a lot of people in all walks of life and levels of society.

In July 1979 my stepmother Phyllis, was taken to Modbury Hospital with a bad gall attack and while she was there my Father got pneumonia and was admitted as well. As Phyl was unable to look after Dad when she left hospital Dad was sent to the Milpara Infirmary for a couple of weeks then given a unit in the home hoping that Phyl would join him as soon as she was well enough. Unfortunately she preferred to stay on in the unit at Klemzig so they were parted for the last couple of months of Dad's life. He had a slight stroke on the 20th September and was transferred to Kalyra at Belair. He passed away on the 28th September, 1979.

Phyl remained at Klemzig until the middle of 1982 when she was transferred to the North East Community Hospital. She was there until her death on the 10th January, 1985, aged 90 years.

Ralph's parents retired to Salisbury about 1957 and then got a unit at Aldersgate Village about 1977. They are both alive, Dad aged 88 years and Mother, 85 years. Dad is still in the original unit but Mother's memory is playing tricks and so she has a room where she can get the attention she needs.

We are still living at Clearview. Ralph chose early retirement, he was only 56 years old, as the attitudes of the younger teachers towards teaching etc. worried him as he was a teacher of the old school and believed in discipline and pride in workmanship. As he'd been very ill with a brain tumour in March 1976 it seemed advisable to retire as soon as possible. Now we are both members of the Riverside Golf Club and spend a great deal of time there and have our home and garden to keep us busy. Our children keep popping in to see us and we are thoroughly enjoying retirement.

Ralph was born on 18 Jul 1924 in Hutchinson Hospital, Gawler, South Australia, died on 12 May 2009 in Flinders Medical Centre, Bedford Park, Adelaide, South Australia at age 84, and was buried on 18 May 2009 in Enfield Memorial Park, Clearview, South Australia.

A quiet wedding took place at All Souls' Church, St. Peters, on Thursday after noon, February 5, when Miss May McBride, elder daughter of Mr. W.J.M. Bride, of "Kooinoo," Burra, and grand-daughter of Mr. R.J.M. McBride, of Kooringa, was married to Dr. Frederick John Jude, of Mildura, Victoria, only son of Mr. M. Jude, of Glenelg. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. W.G.M. Murphy, Miss Jefferies presided at the organ, and the church was tastefully decorated for the occasion. The bride (who was given away by her father) looked charming in a soft, clinging white brocaded silk crepe gown, elaborated with silk applique, a spray of orange blossom was worn in front of the corsage, and the toilette was completed with a white silk crepe hat draped with Chantilly lace and ospreys. She carried a posy of tuberoses and fern tied with a broad, white satin ribbon with her initials beautifully painted on either end, and wore the bridegroom's gift of a gold and aquamarine pendant. The attendant bridesmaid, Miss Ethel Jude (the bridegroom's sister) wore a white lace dress over white silk, relieved with touches of crimson, white tulle hat, with crimson roses. She carried a crimson posy, and wore the bridegroom's gift of a cameo bracelet. Mr. Max Boucaut supported the bridegroom as best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at Burra-bidgy, Clinton Avenue, East Adelaide (the residence of the bride's aunt, Mrs. E.D. Evans), where the relatives of the newly-married couple were entertained. The happy couple left the same afternoon for the hills, en route to the eastern States. The bride's going-away dress was a champagne silk/coat and skirt with which was worn a black velvet hat. The presents were both numerous and handsome.

Pastoralist's Sudden Death In City:
Mr. Robert James McBride, 48, pastoralist, of Willaba station, near Menindee, NSW, collapsed and died in a shop in King William street, city, on Saturday. Mr. McBride, who was born at Burra and educated at Prince Alfred College, was a brother of Messrs. Lindsay McBride, of Bulloo station, 35 miles from Cockburn, and S. McBride, and C. McBride, both of Western Australia. He was a cousin of Messrs. McBride, MHR, and A.J. McBride, well known SA pastoralists. A widow, one son and daughter survive.

A very pretty wedding lhat crealed much interest among a large circle of relatives and friends, was that of Miss Dorothy Allen (daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. A. Allen, Cintra, Corinda) and Mr. William Stewart Donnell (son of the late Mr. A. B. Donnell and Mrs. Donnell, Croydon. South Australia). The ceremony took place at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on March 26, which was prettily decorated for the occasion with arum lilies, asters, and white roses. Large brass vases of bridal asters and arum lilies decorated the communion table, while the guests' pews were defined by trails of asparagus ferns tied with while bows and streamers. The bride, who entered the church with her father (who subsequently gave her away) wore a very dainty wedding frock of petal pink hand embroidered georgette with which was worn a lovely honiton lace veil arranged with a tiny coronet of orange blossoms,

Ron Hughes was an infantry officer who commanded a platoon and a company in World War II. In later years, he commanded a battalion in Korea, a brigade in Vietnam and later a division after Vietnam. First and foremost, Ron was a soldier who had nothing but praise for the fighting qualities of the Australian soldier. His personal attributes included integrity, loyalty, teamwork and self-discipline. Ron was born in Adelaide to Bill and Hilda Hughes. He was a good student and a keen sportsman, who was successful in whatever he did. Ron applied for entry to Duntroon in 1937 and was accepted. His class had their graduation brought forward to 1930 because of the war. He was involved in two amphibious landings, the first with the US 162nd Regiment at Nassau Bay. The US Commander was evacuated with a nervous breakdown and several days Ron advised the 162nd until a new commander arrived. In 1944 Ron finally got his wish of regimental service as a company commander with the 2/3 Infantry Battalion A/F. In 1945 he was promoted to major and returned to Headquarters 1 Australian Corps for the planning associated with the recapture of Borneo. He finished the war as a member of the Australian military mission at McArthur's Tokyo headquarters, returning to Australia in May 1946. Ron was then posted to the Directorate of Military Training.
He married Joan Mitchell on March 8 1947 and they had three sons - Alan, David and Geoffrey.
Ron had a varied and rewarding career after the war. He was an instructor at the School of Tactics and Administration, before becoming an instructor in military history and tactics at Duntroon. Ron was the commanding Officer of the 2nd battalion The Royal Australian Regiment before assuming command of the 3rd battalion The Royal Australian Regiment in Korea. Early in 1953, Ron and Joan's son, Alan, was diagnosed with leukemia. He died several months later. In the late 1950s, Ron was promoted to colonel and appointed director of the industrial mobilization course. Later appointments were deputy director of training and deputy director of military operations. In 1964, Ron was appointed military attaché Indonesia during a time of great unrest. Ron and Joan and other embassy members led a very unsettled and precarious life.
On return to Australia in 1966, Ron was promoted to Brigadier as Commander 6 Task Force in Brisbane. In October 1967, he assumed command of 1st Australian Task Force (IATF) in Vietnam. Ron found this post professionally rewarding, but he missed the personal day-to-day contact with troops that occurred at company and battalion level.
After his return to Australia, Ron was promoted to Maj-General as Director Joint Staff in Defence. In 1974, Ron was appointed Commander 1st Division, which he found very satisfying. Ron was a professional soldier who always gave his best. He was a family man who had great love for his wife and children. He did not advertise himself but his deeds are recorded in military history. The bride's father officiated at the marriage of Miss Kathleen Joan Mitchell to Major Ronald Laurence Hughes, Aust. Staff Corps, at St Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Surrey Hills, on Saturday afternoon.
Eldest daughter of Rev and Mrs Donovan F. Mitchell, of Surrey Hills, the bride was given away by her brother, Mr Bruce Mitchell, and attended by Miss Beth Margaret Mitchell. She wore an ivory satin gown and her mother's Limerick lace veil mounted on tulle. Gardénias formed the spray and trailer she carried.
The bridegroom, who is the elder son of Mr and Mrs O.W. Hughes, of Murray Bridge, South Australia, had Lieut-Colonel R.A. Hay as best man. Reception was at Butleigh Wootton.

'Peace Best Assured By Strong Forces'
CANBERRA. Dec. 12.
The Minister for the Army (Mr. Francis) said today that world peace could best be assured if the British Commonwealth countries built up strong and efficient, forces which were respected by the rest of the world. Mr. Francis was speaking at the graduation ceremony at the Royal Military College, Duntroon. At no time since Federation during years of peace had the responsibilities of the Australian Army been heavier, he said. The Governor-General (Mr. McKell) said that Australia looked to the college to supply military leaders of the future. The graduates included Color-Sgt. James Curnow Hughes, of Middleton, SA. The King's Medal for the cadet graduating first was won by Staff Cadet L. Menz, of Bentleigh, Victoria, and the Sword of Honor for exemplary conduct and performance of duties by Senior Under Officer A.T. Pembroke, of Toowong, Brisbane.

Canberra, Saturday. - One of the 32 young Australians who graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, this week, as first lieutenants in Australia's Regular Army was a South Australian. It was the first full course to graduate since 1938. The South Australian - the fourth to leave the college since the end of the war is 21year old James Curnow Hughes, of Middleton. His elder brother was recently appointed Comanding Officer of No. 2 Battalion. Royal Australian Regiment. His father is Mr. J.W. Hughes, baker, grocer, draper, and postmaster at Middleton. Jim Hughes took the bronze medal for organisation, administration, and military law at Duntroon. He was educated at St. Peter's College. He will spend Christmas at home before taking up his posting in Sydney. Five of the junior cadets who saw Jim collect his pips at the graduation ball were South Australians.
