Occupation: Mail Coach Driver; Residences: Nairne; Strathalbyn; Two Wells.

South Australian Register Wednesday 10 August 1887
COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE.
WILDHORSE PLAINS, August 5.
A public meeting was held in the Institute on Thursday evening to consider the alteration in time of mail arrival and departure, and to test the feelings of the people as to the desirability of opening a branch of the South Australian Farmers' Mutual Association. The inclemency of the weather prevented a large attendance. Mr. David Wilson presided. Mr. William Moyse moved and it was resolved "That Messrs. Robert Barr, William Moyse, and Andrew Barr form a deputation to confer with the people of Two Wells as to the best means of obtaining the alteration of the mail service." It is proposed that the mail shall leave Wild Horse Plains in the morning, returning at night. The Chairman then explained the nature and objects of the South Australian Farmers' Mutual Association. After some hesitation and discussion ten members entered their names and signed the covenant, and the Wild Horse Plains Branch was declared opened. The meeting then elected officers, viz., Messrs. Andrew Barr, President; William Chapman and William Moyse, Vice Presidents; Charles Chapman, Secretary; Robert Barr, jun., Treasurer; and George Wilson and William Manuel, Auditors.

Royal Coachman:
I am looking at a photograph of a man in the prime of life, wearing the Royal livery of the 1867 era. He is William Moyse whose long, raven-black hair is accompanied by a flowing moustache above a formidable, well-groomed, square beard. He was first coachman to the Duke of Edinburgh then. His grandson, Arthur Moyse (Welland), showed me this striking picture. He also has his grandfather's rosewood whip, with its pigskin grip. His cousin, Gerald Moyse, showed me at the Green Shop, Rundle street east, yesterday a beautiful silver watch, inscribed: - 'Presented to William Moyse by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh for his care in driving on the occasion of his visit, November 16, 1867.' Arthur's mother, Mrs C.I. Tomkins, has a gold watch, which, together with a purse of sovereigns, Nairne and other hills residents gave William as a memento of a skilful drive he did, down the Devil's Elbow after the coach (Hill & Co.'s) brakes failed to operate.
Gentleman Moyse:
His quiet demeanor earned him the popular sobriquet of 'Gentleman' Moyse. In latter years he wore a grey silk, three quarter-coat and a half topper. He drove the coach to Two Wells until the Mallala to Long Plains railway was opened. He was 86 when he died at Two Wells in 1916.
