The Advertiser Friday 1 July 1932 Death Notice: HUGHES.- On the 30th June, at his residence, 64, East parade, Mitcham, Josepn Ryder, beloved husband of Jane Elliott Hughes, aged 69 years (suddenly).
The Advertiser Friday 1 Jul 1932 Newspaper Report: Son Finds Father Dead In Vacant Block: Joseph Ryder Hughes (68) of 64 East Parade, Mitcham, was found dead in a vacant allotment off East parade about 8 p.m. yesterday. His son, Horace Simpson Hughes, discovered the body, lying close to some beehives, which Mr. Hughes owned. The dead man had been missing from home since 2 pm, and he had been dead a few hours when discovered.
The Advertiser Tuesday 19 July 1932 & Chronicle Thursday 21 July 1932 Obituary: Mr. Joseph Ryder Hughes, who died at Mitcham was born at North Adelaide on December 27, 1863. He was the second son of the late Joseph Prentice and Mary Hughes, who were married at Nairne in 1861. He was educated at the North Adelaide public school, and afterwards at Whinham College. He was married to Jane Elliot Chapman at Mount Barker, on October 15, 1890, the couple first living at Prospect. Mr. Hughes entered the chaff business, and later joined the clerical staff of Charles Wilcox. Later be was employed at Holden's, and then at the State Bank. Latterly he was interested in the honey industry. He was a member of the Adelaide Harmony Society, and had active membership with Highbury street Enfield, Archer street, and Mitcham Methodist choirs. He leaves an invalid widow. There are three daughters, Miss Ivy May Hughes (Mitcham), Mrs. G. Fidge (Bute), Mrs. V.A. Berry (Perth), and three sons, Messrs. Herbert Chapman Hughes (Mitcham), Horace Simpson Hughes (Kangarilla) and Charles Ronald Hughes (Mitcham).
