Agnes HUGHES (HEWES) [18468]
General Notes:
Bequest from great uncle John Hewes Citizen of London . . . . . the sum of thirty pounds at full age or day of marriage . . . .
Grandfather Nicholas Hewes' bequest to Agnes of valued household chattles 3 Dec 1594 Item I give to Agnes Hue the daughter of my sonne Anthony the cup boarde in the house with nine pauther dublers 2 candlestickes and one chaffendish with one great chest.
Chapter I page 9: . . . . I fear she may have been spoilt to death by him, by her father, and by all her brothers. She cannot have been more than twelve or thirteen years old when the will was written, perhaps fourteen years old; all we have to go on is the fact that her eldest brother hadn't yet reached twentyone years of age and she is the youngest, nor do we know of others who died. Indeed we do not know when her mother died, was it in childbirth ? The birth of Agnes even ? That little lass had been the only female among five males, she would have been old beyond her years and doubtless on her shoulders increasingly there fell the burden of housekeeping. . . . .
