Burra Record (SA : 1878 - 1954) Tue 4 Jul 1939
Wedding
WATKINS- SYMONS.
The colours worn by the bridesmaids were beautifully featured in the decorations at the Redruth Methodist Church on Thursday evening of the 29th June, for the Wedding of Mr. Thomas Keith Watkins, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Watkins, of Hallett, and Mavis G., elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Symons, of Copperhouse, Burra.
The decorations were exceedingly dainty and made a delightful setting for the bridal party. Within the communion were placed brass bowls of beautiful pink carnations and fine fern. Down the central aisle were three lightly made arches of fine fern and pink carnations, these were connected with three central lines of narrow pink streamers.
The Rev. J.A.H. Andrews conducted the service and Miss G. Pearce, cousin of the bride, was at the organ.
The Bridal March was played as the bridal party entered the church and the service opened with the Wedding hymn.
Given away by her father, the bride looked, very graceful in her bridal frock of ivory, brocaded satin. Made with a high neckline, the Peter Pan collar was trimmed with filletted loops and from a shaped yoke 'rucking' formed the fullness, whilst the centre front was finished with tiny buttons. The long sleeves had a filletted point and her long full skirt flared out into a train, over which fell the soft folds of her silk embroidered tulle veil. This was caught to her hair with a coronet of orange buds and she carried a lovely sheaf of white Arum lilies through which was showing clusters of white hyacinths and lilies of the valley. From this fell a lucky horse shoe in which was fastened her engagement ring.
She was attended by Misses Phyllis Symons (sister), Dora Lewis and Sylvia Watkins (sister of bride groom). Their charming frocks of pink silk spotted net mounted on matching taffeta slips. The bodices were finished with Peter Pan collars over a vest effect of finely tucked taffeta with tiny buttons down the front. The short puffed sleeves had three graduated tiny frills of taffeta and the long full skirts were finished with tiny frills. Their dainty Dolly Vardon hats of silver silk crinoline straws, wreathed under the front brim and around the crown with tiny pink and blue flowers, were tied with pink ribbon, they each carried a sheaf of pink carnations, gerbera and sweet peas. Like the bride, they wore silver footwear.
The bridegroom was attended by his brothers, Messrs Fred Watkins, best man, and Allan Watkins with Mr. John Hopkins as groomsmen, The service closed with the singing of "O Perfect Love" after which Miss Dorothy Woollacott sang "Because."
After the ceremony the members of each family with a few friends, were entertained in the Memorial Ball adjoining. Mr. and Mrs Symons with the bridal party and Mr. and Mrs. Watkins, received the guests. Mrs. Symons wore a smart wine shaded costume with Breton hat and gold trimmings and wore a shoulder spray of cloth of gold roses; Mrs. Watkins was frocked in navy blue, with matching hat, relieved with white, and shoulder spray of pink roses.
The table decorations were, the bride's carried out with dainty pink flowers and in the centre was the very handsomely decorated two tiered wedding cake. The guests' table was done in blue iris and fern, The hall decorations were also very effective. For travelling the bride chose a smart frock of teal blue, the draped cowl effect was caught with a large gold clasp. With this was worn a hat of London tan with teal blue trimmings, with all accessories matching.
