News (Adelaide, SA : 1923 - 1954) Wed 31 Jul 1940 Page 6 RED CROSS VARIETY ARTISTS REHEARSE To Tour Suburban Halls The first revue by the newly formed Red Cross Variety Company, to be given in the Unley City Hall on August 14, is now being rehearsed by more than 40 entertainers. The principals will include Rex Dawe (producer), John Duncan, Alice Creed, Frank Waters, Joan Anders, Valma, Joan, and Betty Hewett, Jack Gardiner, Ralph Peterson, Una Kirby, Ron Britton, Lloyd Videon, Dorothy Bedford and Lewis Dawe. All are giving their services free. With prices at 3/, 2/-, and 1/, the first revue programme will tour suitable metropolitan town halls, an entirely new show being prepared for the same circuit when the first has been seen in each place. After the Unley performance, shows will be given at Glenelg (August 21), Thebarton (August 27), Port Adelaide (September 3), Woodville (September 12), Norwood (September 18), St. Peters (September 25), Burnside (October 2 and 3), and Hindmarsh (October 10).
The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1931 - 1954) Thu 22 Aug 1940 Page 11 Humor In Red Cross Show At Glenelg A crowded audience at the Glenelg Town Hall last night saw the Red Cross Variety Company give its second programme. It was as bright as that which opened the series at Unley. Much of the fun was provided by Rex Dawe and John Duncan in a series of sketches, with Alice Creed, Frank Waters and Jack Gardiner. Equally enjoyable were songs by Joan Anders, with a ballet trained by Jean Bedford, and Howard Pfitzner, and violin solos by Kath Yoerger. A popular element of dancing was introduced by Shirley Bushell and Lila Simmons. The Hewitt Sisters gained sustained applause for their harmonies. Pattie Catton, Jack Charnstrom and Lloyd Videon were other favorites. Ron Britton showed skill as a trick cyclist and juggler. Stage effects and lighting, arranged by Mr. C. Addicoat were outstanding features.

Those who are deemed suitable by general manager Alec Regan will be engaged for the theatre, and will also be given facilities to obtain engagements in other States. Local artists who have already been engaged are Lloyd Videon, harmonica player (now in "London Titbits"), Maxine Quinn, mimic, Val Hastwell, contortionist, and Wheelo, trick cyclist.

A crowded house at Hindmarsh last week again showed the popularity of this talented company, which is headed by Rex Dawe. and includes such artists as Jack Gardiner, Alice Creed, Joan Anders, Lloyd Videon, Jack Charstrom, Frank Waters, John Duncan, Bill Dowling, Ralph Peterson, with Jean Bedford's Red Cross ballet and Maurice Sheard's orchestra. Special guest artists at this final performance will be the world-famous Egyptian magician Gogla Pasha and Kathe Yoerger and 16 leading Adelaide violinists in the "Alice Blue Gown Ensemble." Both of these acts are being given through the courtesy of Hoyts Regent Theatre. Tickets will be on sale at the doors.
The Mail (Adelaide, SA : 1912 - 1954) Sat 9 Nov 1940 Page 9 Radio Concert At Children's Hospital Radio entertainers will give a concert on the lawn of the Children's Hospital on December 1 to raise funds for the hospital. The concert will be produced by Howard Cocks, who has been conduct ing fortnightly shows for the troops, and he will have the assistance of about 40 artists. Request numbers, chiefly items by which the entertainers are best known, will comprise the second half of the programme. They will include Maxine Quinn's interpretation of "I Never Cried So Much," Jack Brokensha's xylophone rendition of "Donkey's Serenade," and Lloyd Videon's mouth organ solo "Star Dust." Twelve musicians have formed a band under Mark Ollington for the concert, and items will be given by the Adelaide Banjo Club and Adelaide Hawaiian Club quintet. Artists include Joan Anders, the Hewitt sisters, Ron Britton, and Joyce Massey.
News (Adelaide, SA : 1923 - 1954) Fri 15 Nov 1940 Page 8 Arnold Matters To Sing at Red Cross Gala Arnold Matters. the noted Adelaide singer, will make his first stage appearance here after 11 years, when he sings at the Red Cross gala concert, to beheld at the Regent Theatre on Sunday night. The Adelaide Wireless Chorus, conducted by William Cade, will appear by courtesy of the A.B.C. Others assisting are Joan Anders: Hewett sisters, Lewis Dawe, Maurice Sheard, Mark Ollington, Lloyd Videon, Nightlarks Quartet, Bill Dowling, Kathe Yoerger, Germain and Joe, Keith Rosenthal's Sextet, and Penn Hughes. There are still invitations available, and applications can be made to Miss V. Verran at the Regent, or Mr. Guy Foster, Red Cross Society, Rundle street. The Lady Mayoress (Mrs. Barrett) has convened a committee for the sale of programmes and sweets. Net proceeds without any expenses, as all artists are giving their services free, will go to Red Cross funds.

A special stage has been erected to accommodate Harry Boake Smith's Palais Royal Orchestra, and the existing stage will be used for a variety show. The Banjo Club members will be featured in a spectacular musical act, with 120 players, and other artists to appear include Snowy Towers, Lloyd Videon, the Bray Sisters, Novelty Dutch Trio, Joan Anders, Bob Moore, the Showboat Beauty Ballet, and Ron Young and Andy. Tickets for the carnival night are available at Allan's.
